Invisible thresholds in the Belt and Road market: A selection guide for tropical climate gearboxes

Against the backdrop of the in-depth promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative, Southeast Asia has attracted the attention of many companies with its superior geographical location, rich resources and huge market potential. However, the region’s unique high temperature and high humidity tropical climate have set many invisible thresholds for railway gearboxes selection. If you are not careful, it may lead to frequent equipment failures and shortened service life, which will, in turn, affect the company’s project advancement and economic benefits.

Special requirements for materials in Southeast Asia’s high temperature and high humidity environment

Southeast Asia is in a high temperature and high humidity state all year round, and this environment has many effects on gearbox materials.

From the perspective of mechanical properties, high temperatures will reduce the strength and hardness of metal materials. The yield strength and tensile strength of ordinary carbon steel will drop significantly at high temperatures, making gears more susceptible to deformation and wear during transmission. Therefore, key components of gearboxes, such as gears and shafts, should be made of materials with good high-temperature mechanical properties, such as certain special alloy steels. These alloy steels can maintain high strength and hardness at high temperatures by adding elements such as chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, ensuring the accuracy and stability of gear transmission.

The biggest problem brought about by high-humidity environments is metal corrosion. Humid air contains a lot of moisture, which will react electrochemically with the metal surface, accelerating the oxidation and corrosion of the metal. Ordinary steel will quickly rust in a humid environment. The corrosion products will not only destroy the surface finish of the gear and increase the friction resistance but also cause the gear teeth to become thinner, affecting the transmission accuracy and even causing serious faults such as broken teeth. In order to deal with this problem, corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel should be used for the outer shell and internal key components of the gearbox. The chromium element in stainless steel can form a dense chromium oxide protective film on the metal surface to prevent further erosion by moisture and oxygen; for some parts that cannot be made of stainless steel, surface plating technology such as galvanizing and nickel plating can be used to improve their corrosion resistance.

In addition, the performance of sealing materials in high temperature and high humidity environments is also crucial. If the seal is not good, moisture will invade the interior of the gearbox and accelerate the corrosion of parts. Therefore, rubber or plastic materials that are resistant to high temperature and moisture and have good sealing performance should be selected as seals, such as fluoro rubber, which has excellent high-temperature resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and aging resistance and can maintain good sealing effects for a long time in harsh environments.

Salt spray test standards and adaptability of railway gearboxes

The salt spray test is an important method to evaluate the salt spray corrosion resistance of materials and components. In the coastal areas of Southeast Asia, the salt content in the air is high. Railway gearboxes are exposed to such environments for a long time and are extremely susceptible to salt spray corrosion.

At present, the commonly used salt spray test standards in the world are the neutral salt spray test (NSS), acetate spray test (AASS) and copper accelerated acetate spray test (CASS). The neutral salt spray test is carried out in a 5% sodium chloride solution; the test temperature is 35°C, and the relative humidity is greater than 95%. It mainly simulates the corrosion effect of the general marine atmosphere on the material. The acetate spray test is based on the neutral salt spray test, and a small amount of glacial acetic acid is added to the solution to reduce the pH value of the solution to 3.0-3.1. The corrosion rate is 2-3 times faster than the neutral salt spray test. The copper accelerated acetate spray test is based on the acetate spray test, and a small amount of copper chloride is added. The corrosion rate is faster, about 8 times that of the neutral salt spray test.

For railway gearboxes, due to the harsh operating environment and extremely high requirements for safety and reliability, more stringent salt spray test standards should be selected for evaluation. Generally speaking, at least the acetate spray test should be passed to ensure that the gearbox has sufficient corrosion resistance in the high salt spray environment in coastal areas.

In the selection process of railway gearboxes, it is necessary not only to pay attention to whether the material and protective coating of the gearbox itself can pass the salt spray test but also to consider its sealing performance. Even if the material of the gearbox has good corrosion resistance, if the seal is not good, salt spray will still invade the interior and cause corrosion of parts. Therefore, the sealing structure of the gearbox should be reasonably designed, the seals should be high-quality products, and regular inspection and maintenance should be carried out.

In short, in the market expansion of the “Belt and Road”, enterprises must fully realize the special requirements of the tropical climate in Southeast Asia for gearbox selection. Only by scientific material selection, strict quality inspection and reasonable sealing design can the gearbox be ensured to operate stably in high temperature, high humidity and high salt spray environments so as to break through this invisible threshold, win competitive advantages in the Southeast Asian market, and achieve sustainable development.
